For example, your opponent could cast Endless One (with mana cost <img src="/Handlers/Image.ashx?size=small&name=X&type=symbol" alt="Variable Colorless" align="absbottom" />) with X equal to 5, but not with X equal to 6.

Mistcutter Hydra (a creature with mana cost <img src="/Handlers/Image.ashx?size=small&name=X&type=symbol" alt="Variable Colorless" align="absbottom" /><img src="/Handlers/Image.ashx?size=small&name=G&type=symbol" alt="Green" align="absbottom" />) could block, but Endless One could not.
